If your computer starts to a black screen with only the mouse cursor, this video shows manual fixes you can try before reinstalling Windows. Many people reinstall Windows too early, but sometimes the issue is caused by Windows Explorer not starting, broken Winlogon registry values, startup errors, corrupted files, or malware.
Try these steps carefully:
Solution 1: Restart Windows Explorer manually
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Go to File / New Task.
Type: C:\Windows\explorer.exe
If Windows Explorer starts, check drive C for errors and reboot.
Solution 2: Disconnect external devices
If Safe Mode also shows a black screen, disconnect USB drives, external hard drives, Ethernet cable, DVD/Blu-ray drives, and other unnecessary devices. Then restart Windows normally.
Solution 3: Use Windows recovery options
Press F8 during startup.
Choose Repair Your Computer.
Try Startup Repair first.
If that does not work, try System Restore to an earlier working point.
Solution 4: Repair Winlogon registry keys
Open Task Manager.
Go to File / New Task.
Type: regedit
Navigate to:

Check Shell:
It should be only: explorer.exe
Check Userinit:
It should be: c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Some black screen problems can be caused by malware or damaged system files. A rescue disk or offline virus scan may help if Windows cannot start normally.
