Solidworks 2015 User Interface: explaining the solidworks 2015 User Interface.
Today we are going to discuss the solid works 2015 user interface, the screen you are viewing is a result of mini launch in solid works 2015 software. This is the opening screen, now before we go into the part, assembly or the drawing environment let us take a look of what we have on the screen in front of us. On the upper left hand corner we have the standard tool bar we can create a new document, open existing document, save, print, along with other options. If we select the word solid works a fly-out menu appears giving us accesses to several dropdown menus File, view, tools and help I recommend you pin this menu. Then you will see the standard tool bar dock to the right. In the upper right hand corner we have a window called search command this allows you to find and run solid works commands.

Part design environment
Now let us begin a new document I am going to select a new icon a new solid works document dialog box appears. As you notice we have 3 environments part, assembly and drawing I am going to select part and then select ok. Now you first go into the part environment it is always good into making a practice of making sure your units are set correctly. Now says my units are MMGS (millimeter, gram, second) if you are going to work in different unit you can simply select units from this menu I am going to leave this as MMGS.
Exploring the part design environment
Now this area of the screen is called the graphics area. This is where you create your sketches, parts, assemblies and drawings on the far left hand side of the screen, we have our feature manager design tree now to better demonstrate this, I am going to open the part file. I will select open, and the part file opens on the screen now let us take another look at the feature manager design tree. This feature manager design tree has all the parameters that were used to create this model this consists of sketches and features, if you recall solid works is a parametric feature based modeler.
What do you mean by parametric feature based modeler?
parametric feature based modeler means we can go back to this feature manager design tree in the part environment or the assembly environment or the drawing environment and make changes, and those changes will be reflected in the other environments.
What is dynamic reference visualization?
In solid works 2015 a new feature called dynamic reference visualization was added to display graphical relationships between items in the feature manager design tree. Dynamic reference visualization allows you to see the parent child relationships to turn this option on right click the part name or the assembly name and select the dynamic reference visualization icon, when you hover your courser over an item you will see a blue arrow pointing from the child to a parent.
Now let us take a look at the top of the screen here we have what we call as a command manager and notice we have a different tabs which brings up different ribbons we have a feature ribbon, sketch ribbon and evaluate ribbon.
How to add Ribbons?
If we right mouse click in anyone of the tabs we see a menu allowing us to open up other ribbons. For example if I right mouse click on evaluate ribbon you can see a menu opens and then if I select sheet metal the sheet metal ribbon opens up.
In the top middle of the graphics area we see a heads up view tool bar this is handy way to get to some of the most common commands that you use when creating sketches, parts, assemblies and drawings. For example zoom to fit, zoom to area, previous view and then we our different orthographic views
Working with orthographic views
In this we can see the front, top, bottom, left, right and rear views of the model, and if you have this button view selection activated by simply tapping the space bar you can select a face to give you a certain view. For example a front view or a right hand side view or a top view or a isometric view and that isometric view can be any from one of these corners or even a bottom view let us go back to isometric view and select space bar one more time.
