Linux Boot Process | Stage 1: BIOS and UEFI | CompTIA Linux+ Prep
Hi guys! Mimz here and welcome back! Today's tech tutorial is on Linux, specifically a preparation for the CompTIA Linux+ exam. Today I am discussing Stage 1 of the boot process: BIOS and UEFI.
The First stage is strictly hardware, but it is important because it connects hardware to software.
BIOS - Basic Input Output Systems
UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Interface
BIOS and UEFI have the same goal and usually a computer only has one or the other.
Differences:
BIOS:
Boot Sector holds the Master Boot Record (MBR)
MBR tells the computer where partitions are and where to boot.
BIOS is limited to only 4 partitions on the drive
Drive size itself has a limit
UEFI:
Uses a specialized partition that hold all boot codes for the operating system, which points to the whole drive
Stores many partitions
Support much larger hard drives
UEFI also has more features, such as Secure boot
If you have an old PC that still runs BIOS, there are hacks to modify this stage and allow for larger hard drives and such, but most newer computers will use UEFI.
