Russia has announced new, specific goals for its so-called "special operation"—to establish control over southern and eastern Ukraine. In addition to a land corridor to Crimea and Transnistria, Russia has another strategic goal: cutting Ukraine off from the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. This would significantly reduce trade and exports of wheat and metal to third countries, paralyzing the Ukrainian economy. However, experts doubt the Russian army is capable of accomplishing this task.
