Following the advice of Doc_Ok (okreylos here on Youtube), I tried switching from pointcloud representation to building real-time polygons from the depth and color data coming from the Kinect for Windows v2. The result is a huge improvement. This is just a very preliminary experiment though. Framerate has to be improved a lot for it to be practical, and I have to start over thinking about compression of the data.
What you're seeing is a build for the new Oculus Rift Developer Kit 2 using Unity3D. The positional tracking is a big improvement in feeling like you're there, and I think true 3D video has a benefit here over stereoscopic 3D, where you can't have positional changes.
The new beta SDK from Oculus has just been released and it's difficult to get it working under all conditions, so I'll probably won't be releasing a demo until it's a bit more stable.
