what to look for when buying a used ATV
Save this video and reference it before buying a used ATV SPORT QUAD.
VISUAL TEST: look for signs of wear and tear. smoothed out pegs, worn spot on the frame and motor casings. rubbed out hand grips. Chain slack and condition. worn sprockets. Rims and tires. bends, dents, cracks, dings and air leaks. look for frame damage, bent and broken parts. blown shock seals. rust and corrosion. structural frame damage. missing parts. tweaked and or twists.
SMELL TEST: smell for fuel ,coolant and oil leaks. smell the oil to notice if it smells burn or like fuel.feel the oil for grit. touch it, smell it... maybe a taste it.. no dont do that . smell the electronics after using or starting your sport quad.
TOUCH TEST: Grab and shake, move it around. look and listen for anything thats loose. Squish the seat and check for rotting foam. Rolling it to check bearings and brakes. push on the suspension to check for stiffness and or weak rebound and compression. Sit on the machine and check the steering for lose bolt, parts and any knocking noises. move levers ,throttle and switches to see if everything moves properly . check bearings and bushings for any slack and un wanted movement. better when lifted off the ground. check all moving parts. bolt check the ATV for loose and missing nuts, bolts and fasteners. check all fluids and then...
TEST RIDE: make sure it goes smooth thru all the gears, shifts properly. test the brakes. feel for loose handling. smooth throttle and acceleration. feel if it has some sputtering or missing. if it starts rides and stops properly. after the test ride and the motor is warm do a compression test.
PARTS AND REPAIRS: before you go see the sport quad ATV make sure to research the price of parts including all bushings and bearings. chains, sprockets, replacement bars grips and controls.and at worst case an engine rebuild kit.
I'm sure I missed a few things (comment below if I did) but, you should now be prepared to negotiate a price.
