In this Community Session, we review the recent milestones our Backstage community hit, chat with Djamaile Rahamat, our contributor spotlight, and watch three demos ranging from new plugins to test environments.
• Backstage’s Birthday 🥳🎂!! (1:10): To celebrate Backstage turning 2️⃣, Spotify’s Backstage DevRel team put together a birthday video featuring maintainers and contributors to discuss all things Backstage. Check out the video ( • Backstage's 2nd Birthday ) and read more about Backstage’s birthday in this blog: https://backstage.io/blog/2022/03/16/...
• But wait – there’s more! 📟(6:10): As Himanshu points out, Backstage is blessed 🙏by our community, and our community’s involvement with Backstage is part of the reason we were able to reach a few other milestones this month like Incubation and 1.0. Read more on Backstage incubation in the CNCF’s blog: https://www.cncf.io/blog/2022/03/15/b... and read more on Backstage's 1.0 Release https://backstage.io/blog/2022/03/17/...
• Contributor Spotlight 🤓🔦(7:46): Simply put, our contributors deserve A LOT of praise and recognition 👏, and this month hats off to Djamaile Rahamat 🙇🏻! Spotify’s Himanshu chats with him about how he started working on developer experience, got involved with the open source community, and discovered Backstage. Djamaile recommends using Discord as a great place to learn – check him out ,too, on Discord, user name: Red 🟥. Reminder! You can nominate anyone for contributor’s spotlight (even yourself) here: https://backstage.io/nominate
• DEMOS ✖️ 3️⃣! 👨🏫🧑🎓(14:37): Teachers became the students and students became the teachers in this community session as we followed along three demos this month. Phillip Kuang kicked us off this month with a new way to preview Scaffolder Templates. With this latest development, you don’t have to commit changes before previewing updates. Next, Julio Zynger from SoundCloud schooled us (22:34) as he talked about a NEW! ❗plugin called Periskop and important takeaways for creating a plugin for Backstage. This new plugin is all about monitoring errors. Learn more about it here: https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/even.... To wrap up the session, Charles Lowell (34:58) walked us through how Frontside created an Ingestion Integration Test Suite for Backstage. Learn about how each test he runs has its own Backstage server 🤯.
