To obtain this view, the patient's foot is placed in a neutral position, with the toes pointing upward and the leg aligned at a 90-degree angle. The X-ray beam is directed towards the inner aspect of the ankle joint, passing through the talus and tibia. This helps visualize the mortise joint, formed by the distal tibia and fibula, with the talus nestled between them. Common pathologies identified through this view include fractures, dislocations, and osteoarthritis. The mortise view allows for proper assessment of joint congruity, determining if the talus is aligned correctly between the tibia and fibula. If there is any malalignment, it can indicate ligamentous injury or disruption, which might require further evaluation.
