🔴 In this tutorial we're going to look at how to sort by date in Microsoft Excel.
I created a table containing first name, last name, email and a sign out date with help from mockaroo.com and we will use this data to explore how to sort by date in Excel.
The video is split across 3 parts:
1. Making sure that our column has the correct format.
2. The quickest way to sort by date in Excel.
3. Alternative ways to sort by date which could be useful in certain scenarios.
The dates where we perform the sorting need to be stored in the correct format (Date format) otherwise the operation will be performed erroneously, and we will show how to make sure that the format is correct either by setting our format specifically or by using Format Painter.
The quickest way to sort by date is by selecting the column containing the dates and using the Sort & Filter button under the Editing group from the HOME tab.
The options that this button provides are A to Z and Z to A - which could prove to be confusing when sorting values that are not text, but we'll just have to note that A to Z means ascending (or from the smallest date - the one further away in the past, to the biggest date - the closest date to the present moment.) and Z to A means sorting the dates descending, or from the most recent to the oldest.
In the later part of the tutorial we will explore more interesting ways to sort which could prove to be useful when doing more advanced work with data.
