Olduvai Gorge, East Africa — 2 million years ago. In a world of extreme climatic instability, Hebi — a Homo habilis — struggles to survive. While other species specialize in tough, plant-based diets, Hebi takes a different path. With a growing brain and remarkable adaptability, she diversifies her diet, crafts stone tools, and unlocks new energy sources: meat and marrow. This surplus energy fuels a powerful evolutionary feedback loop — enabling further brain expansion at the expense of the digestive system, a concept known as the Expensive Tissue Hypothesis. Though not a direct ancestor, but rather a sister species, Hebi represents something extraordinary: the first spark of what it means to be human.
