A thousand years ago, any long journey outside densely populated areas carried enormous risks. In the Middle Ages, almost nothing was in use that allows us to easily travel from place to place today. There were no roads in the modern sense, almost no signposts, and—perhaps most intriguing from our perspective—no maps were used at all.
