Hello Students. As per the requests by several viewers, I decided to continue the answer elaboration for Edexcel IAL 2019 May unit 1 physics paper structure questions. However, we will be uploading separate videos for each question for your convenience
.
According to the question, you should be able to understand that we have to use the concept of conservation of momentum which states that
Total momentum of a system before = Total momentum of the system after, provided that there are no external forces.

Since the child, the ball and skateboard are initially at rest, initial total momentum of the System is zero. And according to conservation of momentum
the total momentum before the ball is thrown = total momentum after the ball is thrown.
(so the final total momentum should also be equal to zero).
For this to occur the total momentum of the child and the skateboard should be equal and
opposite in direction to the momentum of the ball.
As the mass of the child and skateboard is greater than the mass of the ball, the velocity of the child and skateboard will be lower.
