This is a presentation of the Breviary created around 1370 for King Charles V of France (1338-1380) for use in the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, acquired by the BnF (National Library of France) in 2024 through a public fundraising campaign.
Richly illustrated with 33 miniatures by two illuminators, the Master of the Bible of Jean de Sy and the Master of the Coronation Book of Charles V, this breviary is one of the most accomplished examples of Gothic illumination. It is also an exceptional testament to the royal patronage of Charles V, who had himself portrayed in several illuminations, and to the prestigious library he assembled throughout his reign.

🧐 About the Richelieu Treasures
The National Library of France (BnF), the National Institute of Art History (INHA), and the National School of Charters (ENC) are organizing the 13th edition of the Richelieu Treasures. Curators, collection managers, historians of art, performance, fashion, music, literature, and text specialists will discuss a work or document, sharing their knowledge with a wide audience. Each lecture will feature works of art, manuscripts, rare books, prints, photographs, musical scores, or objects brought out for special occasion from the collections of the BnF, INHA, and ENC. These pieces are filmed live using a camera, which reproduces their finest details on the large screen of the Jacqueline Lichtenstein Auditorium (Galerie Colbert). A dialogue unfolds around this setup, connecting the history of the collections, the materiality of the artworks, the contexts of their creation and dissemination, and their contribution to past and present research.
The series is open to all audiences interested in heritage, art history, and history.
