Moscow Region police have detained members of a group suspected of extorting money from taxi drivers.
"It has been established that the perpetrators, under threat of violence, demanded 3,000 rubles monthly from Mytishchi entrepreneurs providing private taxi services for criminal protection," said Tatyana Petrova, head of the press service for the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Moscow Region.
"During investigative operations near a shopping center on Ostashkovskoye Highway, police officers detained the suspects while they were handing over the demanded sum," Petrova said.
The Investigative Department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has opened a criminal case under Article 163 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, "Extortion." This article carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison.
The detainees have been remanded in custody.
