Two simple DIY with ingredients at home to see Newton’s first law / Inertia in action.

Have you ever felt the jerk when a moving car stops suddenly and wondered what that was ? It was inertia or Newton’s first law. According to the law of inertia or Newton’s first law, any object in a state of rest or motion will continue to remain so until an external force acts on it. Or in other words, all objects has to inertia or resistance to change its state of rest or motion. When a moving car stops, we move forward because of our body’s inertia to change it’s state of motion. Consider a ball that is thrown up, it falls down after sometime and comes to rest due to gravity and air friction. If the same ball is thrown in outer space, where there is no gravity or air, the ball would just keep moving in the same direction forever. That’s what happens will all the objects in space like asteroids and meteorites. In fact, the asteroid that hit the earth during the time of dinosaurs was moving in space for billions of years before that. One more interesting thing to note is, though we call it “Newton’s first law”, it was Galileo was first talked and experimented about Inertia. Newton put it together as laws of motion and reiterated it.
