Located on the Brunswick Peninsula north of the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas (English: ''Sandy Point") is the capital city of Chile's southermost region, Magelleanes and Antarctica Chilean. The city was official renamed Magallanes in 1927, but in 1938 it was changed back to Punta Arenas.

The city is often a base for Antarctic expeditions, although Ushuaia (Argentina) and Christchurch (New Zealand) are also common starting points.
Among Chileans the city is also known for its strong winds (up to 130km/hour). When we walked to the city in the morning, even though it was sunny but cold and windy indeed. There were many vendors selling wool hats and sweaters on the street ready for the unexpected tourists.
