In May 2022, the case of Julissa Thaler shocked the United States. She was sentenced to life in prison for a heinous crime. Julissa had a difficult life with many problems, but many people still found it hard to believe that she could commit such a terrible act. In court, she pleaded innocent, claiming that the United States government agencies were largely to blame.
This complicated story began on December 15, 2015, when Julissa gave birth to her son Eli, who was diagnosed with Townes-Brocks syndrome, a genetic disorder. The pregnancy was carried to full term, and Eli underwent several surgeries in the first months of his life. Although intellectually healthy, Eli had mobility problems, kidney disease, and needed a hearing aid. However, He was a happy and sociable child.
At 22, Julissa ended her relationship with Tory Hart, the father of Eli, and moved in with her mother for a while. During her youth, she began facing significant challenges. From ages 13 to 18, she frequently stayed in psychiatric hospitals for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. She had conflicts with her parents and ran away from home multiple times. These issues persisted after her child was born. In particular, she was closely monitored by the Department of Child Support Services in Minnesota because, in 2017, her child did not receive necessary medications and appropriate treatment. Julissa was also criticized for not adequately meeting her son's needs.
