Bromsgrove is first recorded in the early 9th century as Bremesgraf (later Bremesgrave) in the Anglo-Saxon period. The name probably means “Bremi’s grove” — referring to a person (Bremi) + grove/wood.
Its location was strategic: on key trade routes between Worcester and Birmingham. That road remains roughly what is today High Street / Worcester Road.
As was common, growth around the High Street followed medieval plot layouts; traders and craftsmen.

The Golden Cross Hotel (20 High Street): Originally an 18th-century coaching inn, though substantially rebuilt in 1932.
Many of the buildings along High Street are Georgian or 18th/19th-century in style. These, plus some Victorian additions (Victorian Gothic etc.), give the street a mix of architectural styles.
