101st Kilometer - The Border Between Soviet Heaven and Hell
The expression "Send beyond 101 kilometers" is now firmly established in the Russian language. In Soviet times, individuals considered politically unreliable by the authorities were sent not only to prison, but also to the distant regions for re-education. They were deprived of the joys of big cities, such as a supply of scarce goods, restaurants and cafes, the opportunity to get a good job, etc. These people were forbidden to settle and register closer than 100 kilometers from these cities, and for violation they could be sent to the zone for a couple of years. This was a way to control migration in USSR and to keep dangerous people out of the capitals. In the 1930s, "enemies of the people" were exiled beyond the 101st kilometer. In 1953 this territory was seriously replenished with amnesties. During the 1980 Olympics, this is also where all the untrustworthy people from Moscow were deported. Many of these "settlers" still live in those places to this day. At the 101st kilometer from Moscow are Egoryevsk, Kolomna, Shatura, Orekhovo-Zuevo, Zaraisk, Volokolamsk, Mozhaisk, Ruza, Dubna, Taldom, and Stupino.
