Gran Sasso Raid - The Rescue Of Benito Mussolini
In September 1943, after Allied troops landed in southern Italy, the Grand Council of Fascism voted a motion of no confidence against prime minister Benito Mussolini.
On the same day, King Victor Emmanuel the third replaced him with Marshal Badoglio and Mussolini was imprisoned.
On September 7, German signals intelligence intercepted a coded Italian report which indicated that the fascist leader was imprisoned somewhere in the Abruzzi mountains.
In a daring and dramatic mission, German paratroopers were sent to rescue him.
