Qatar Airways' $2.15 BILLION Record Profit: Why They Sold Cathay Pacific & Bet on Starlink | Q3 2025 Strategy
Qatar Airways Group cemented its status as one of the world's most profitable carriers with a major strategic realignment in late 2025. We break down the historic financial results and the massive shift in their global investment portfolio.
Record Financial Performance: Qatar Airways Group reported a record-breaking net profit of QAR 7.85 billion (US2.15billion) for the 2024/25 fiscal year, marking a 28. Total revenue climbed to QAR 86 billion (US 23.4 billion). The Group also maintained a robust EBITDA margin of roughly 24%. Furthermore, Qatar Airways Cargo defied general trends, reporting a 17% increase in revenue due to growth in specialized logistics and e-commerce.
The Strategic Pivot (Late 2025): The most significant financial development was the divestment of its long-held position in Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific. In November 2025, Qatar Airways finalized the sale of its entire 9.7% stake in Cathay Pacific for approximately US$ 897 million in cash. This decision allows the Group to reallocate nearly $1 billion in capital toward new equity partnerships and fleet modernization.
New Global Investments: This capital is being strategically redirected under the "Qatar Airways 2.0" initiative to focus on carriers that serve as effective feeder networks for the Doha hub. In 2025, the Group acquired:
• A 25% stake in Virgin Australia, aiming to capture traffic from the lucrative Australian market.
• An equity stake in Airlink, enhancing connectivity across the African continent.
Innovation and Operational Growth: Qatar Airways is differentiating its product by becoming the first carrier in the MENA region—and the first global airline—to begin equipping its Boeing 777 fleet with Starlink Wi-Fi. This product innovation offers ultra-high-speed, low-latency internet for free.
Operationally, the airline is capitalizing on demand by adding 3,000 additional flights as part of its Winter 2025 network boost. The airline also took delivery of new Airbus A321neo and A350-1000 aircraft in Q3/Q4 2025 to support its expansion.
