The Malabar Civet (Viverra civettina) is a critically endangered small mammal endemic to the Western Ghats of India. While comprehensive data on the current population status is limited, the species has experienced a significant decline in numbers and distribution over the years.

Historically, the Malabar Civet had a larger range within the Western Ghats region, including parts of Karnataka and Kerala states in southern India. However, due to habitat loss caused by deforestation, conversion of forests for agriculture, and human encroachment, the suitable habitat for the Malabar Civet has become fragmented and reduced in size.

Additionally, the Malabar Civet has faced significant hunting pressure, driven by the demand for its musk, which is used in traditional medicine and perfume production. This unsustainable hunting, along with habitat degradation, has contributed to the decline in population.

Currently, the Malabar Civet is considered one of the rarest mammals in the world. It is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The exact population numbers are uncertain, and the species is believed to have a highly restricted and fragmented distribution within its remaining habitat.

Conservation efforts are underway to protect the Malabar Civet and its habitat. These include the establishment of protected areas, efforts to raise awareness about the species' plight, and initiatives to combat illegal hunting and trade. Research and monitoring programs are also being conducted to gather more data on the species' population and behavior, which can inform conservation strategies and actions.
