How did they correct errors on old computers without a Backspace key?
It all started with old typewriters, where deleting a character was impossible: if you made a mistake, you had to use correction tape, white ink, or simply cross it out.
Later, in the 1950s, teletypes added a Backspace key, but it didn't erase text—it only moved the carriage back one step, allowing you to type a new character over the old one.
The early Apple IIs didn't have a Backspace key at all. If you wanted to correct an error, you had to move the cursor with the arrow keys and manually replace the character—just like on a typewriter.
Essentially, early programmers edited code "by touch," and every typo cost them extra minutes.
