Perhaps more so than any other genre, hip-hop has been notoriously wary of a squeaky clean image. While there’s nothing to say that you can’t be conscious or espouse wisdom where you believe that you have insights to give on a topic, the rap game has an intense wariness for those who come off as though they know better in a way that is pretentious, preachy or, worst of all, corny.
With the latter serving as a tagline that’s become increasingly difficult to shift once it’s given to you, it’s something which any rapper who has witnessed the public’s revulsion for MC’s such as Chance The Rapper, Logic and Hopsin should seek to avoid.
But if any rapper seems to be flying too close to the sun in this regard, it’s Cordae.
