Title: The role of neutral hydrogen in the life of galaxies.

Abstract: Neutral hydrogen (HI) is probably the most important element in the Universe. It is not just a building block of all the structure we see in the Universe, but it also plays an important role in the formation and evolution of galaxies. In my talk I will discuss scientific cases which demonstrate the power of HI observations and insights HI uniquely provides for the studies of galaxy formation and evolution. Furthermore, I will provide the updates on the large HI surveys which are being currently undertaken with the state-of-the-art observational facilities, in preparation for the SKA era. In particular, I will focus on the recent results from the MIGHTEE survey observed with MeerKAT radio telescope. It is one of the first deep, blind, medium-wide interferometric surveys for neutral hydrogen ever undertaken.
