In the middle of the Indian Ocean, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, lies the island paradise of Chagos. Coconut plantations, beautiful beaches, azure waters. What was essentially insignificant on the world stage for centuries became one of the most important American military bases in the 1960s. It sounds crazy, but today Chagos has American supermarkets, football, and even cheerleaders. But what actually happened to the islanders? Why is the Chagos archipelago still a colony?
