What Living Abroad Is Teaching Me About Being American

Spending years living and traveling abroad has completely reshaped the way I see the world, culture, identity, and the people we share this planet with.

Being an American living overseas has never been simple. It comes with assumptions, stereotypes, and sometimes being judged for things I never chose. But through those experiences, I’ve learned one of the most important lessons of my life- so many people around the world are carrying the weight of circumstances that they were given.

Living abroad has taught me empathy.

It taught me that behind every border, every language, every culture, and every person is a story we often know nothing about. The world we see through headlines and social media can sometimes make it feel like we are surrounded by enemies- creating fear, division, and distance between people who are far more connected than we realize.

The more time I spend experiencing the world firsthand, the more I believe understanding is the antidote to fear.

Every morning, I try to wake up with the intention to learn more, listen more, and judge less. I believe travel has the power to break down these invisible walls we build between ourselves and others, not because it makes us all the same, but because it reminds us that our differences are part of what makes humanity beautiful.

This channel is my small contribution toward creating more curiosity, compassion, and connection in a world that desperately needs it.

If you’ve ever lived abroad, traveled somewhere unfamiliar, felt misunderstood, or questioned the way we view each other, I hope this video resonates with you.
