you can set any key combination to startup your webcam in VLC. Open Systems Settings, Keyboard, Shortcuts, Custom. Click the Plus sign to create a new shortcut. Type in "VLC" for description. In Command paste in the following: vlc -f "v4l2://" /dev/video0 Now assign any key combination you want. Be consistent, or you will forget your own inventions and confuse yourself. Click on the right side of the new line and assign your key combination. If you want to disable it all you have to do is use Backspace. It is better to disable than erase because you may want to reactivate it later and that saves you from retyping. You can also use Cheese instead of VLC. The -f command makes it fullscreen. You can use Ctrl-H and F11 in combination as needed. For that matter, you can also use Compiz Grid to place your window via the ten-key. See my prior videos on how to use grid.
