A button is pressed - and then one can observe how frustrated magnets take decisions in a triangular relationship. All in all, there are about a septillion ways in which the magnetic bars can finally align themselves. This can be figured from the number of magnets–in this case 113. Each time the button is pressed, a slightly different picture emerges–because the respective arrangement of the magnets always represents a compromise and is never the ideal situation. In research, such compromise states are used to develop building blocks for quantum computers.

The Würzburg-Dresden Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat–Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter explores novel quantum materials in high performance laboratories, revealing surprising phenomena under extreme conditions such as ultra-low temperature, high pressure, or strong magnetic field.
