The Problem With GTA 5
GTA 5 is possibly the most popular and recognizable video game in history. It has been this way for over 10 years now, and I feel like most people are getting tired of its consistent presence in the spotlight. GTA online has been more or less stagnant for the past few years, with rockstar games releasing mediocre update after mediocre update, and the game is so old that I’d bet a significant portion of the game’s player-base was born after the game’s release date. For me personally, I’ve been playing GTA 5 since not too long after its release. Since playing GTA San Andreas on the ps2, I’ve been enamored by the grand theft auto franchise. Its concept was everything I wanted from a game: life, but with a little extra freedom. As I grew older, I started to appreciate the GTA franchise’s stories and prioritized them over the gameplay. GTA 4 remains an all time favorite game for me and I made a whole video explaining why. GTA 5 still captures the charm of the franchise, with high octane police shootouts and chases still being as exhilarating as the previous installments, but in my opinion, the story of GTA 5 doesn’t hold up compared to the rest. Franklin, Michael and Trevor aren’t nearly as good as characters such as Arthur Morgan, Niko Bellic, John Marston and CJ. They simply don’t have the nuance and depth that those characters have. I feel like GTA 5 is not something that you should carefully analyze and break down. It’s more like a dumb action movie that shouldn’t be taken at face value, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you like GTA 5’s story, all power to you. I just prefer the deeper storytelling that can be seen in some of rockstar’s other games. I truly think rockstar is going to make a tremendously heartbreaking story with GTA 6. The relationship between Jason and Lucia surely will be very captivating, and I speculate that the ending of GTA 6 will probably involve one of them dying or being gravely injured. Hopefully they don’t make it too shallow and satirical. I hope they learn from their previous mistakes and give us a solid story
