Why is Clippy everyone's profile picture?
In recent months, Clippy—Microsoft Office's old paperclip assistant—has become the profile picture of many users as a symbol of protest against big tech companies.
Credit for this trend goes to Louis Rossmann, who on August 8, 2025, posted a video inviting his audience to change their profile picture to Clippy—to denounce practices such as data collection, information sales, data use for AI, planned obsolescence, and censorship.
For many, joining means remembering an era when software like Office didn't push ads, didn't profile users, or "steal" their data: Clippy represents an ideal, "innocent" software that—despite being seen as annoying—did not betray trust.
