Rhabdomyolysis, or "rhabdo," is a serious condition that can occur when muscle tissue breaks down rapidly, releasing proteins like myoglobin into the bloodstream. This can happen after extreme overexertion, such as during an intense spin class, especially for individuals unaccustomed to such high levels of physical activity. The repetitive, high-intensity muscle contractions in spin classes can overwhelm the muscles, leading to microscopic tears and, in severe cases, the breakdown of muscle fibers.

The released proteins and byproducts can overwhelm the kidneys, potentially causing kidney damage or even failure if not treated promptly. Early symptoms include severe muscle pain, swelling, weakness, and dark-colored urine. While spin classes can be a fantastic workout, it’s essential to listen to your body, stay hydrated, and gradually increase intensity to avoid overexertion and reduce the risk of rhabdomyolysis.
