Earlier in 2024 in a landmark case, the banana company Chiquita Brands International was found liable in a US court for financing a paramilitary group in Colombia.

However it wasn't the first time the banana supplier and distributor has been found to have funded violence, albeit under a different name. In fact the banana industry has a long history of complicity in human rights abuses. Josh Toussaint-Strauss investigates Chiquita's past, discovering its links with historical atrocities in Colombia and drawing parallels with more recent revelations.
