Lesson 44: Basic Service Set

Basic Service Set (BSS)
Clients should share their capabilities with Wireless Device/Access Point (AP) before connecting to a wireless network, such that end devices can access wireless services. This sharing is called the Basic Service Set (BSS).
Basic Service Area (Cell)
An AP's wireless coverage area is known as the Basic Service Area (BSA), sometimes referred to as the Wireless Cell. A client may be connected to more than one Access Point at once to provide a larger coverage area and adapt to changes in location without losing connection to the LAN.
SSID
SSID stands for Service Set Identifier, which is the name of your network. Your laptop or phone will show you a list of SSIDs when you open the list of Wi-Fi networks. SSIDs are broadcasted by access points and routers so nearby devices can find and display available networks.
Association
The end devices join using the AP's MAC address (BSSID - BSS Identifier) using the SSID, this joining process is called association.
Distribution System
As an AP has both wired and wireless capabilities, it can also connect to an Ethernet network. So, the upstream wired network is called the Distribution system.
