Pablo Neruda - You've Been Like No One Since I Started Loving You - Valentine's Day
Today I bring you again a giant of prose. None other than Don Pablo Neruda with his poem 14.
You play every day with the light of the universe.
Subtle visitor, you arrive in the flower and in the water.
You are more than this white little head that I squeeze
like a bunch of flowers in my hands every day.
You have resembled no one since I loved you.
Let me lay you among yellow garlands.
Who writes your name in letters of smoke among the stars of the south?
Ah, let me remember you as you were then
when you did not yet exist.
Suddenly the wind howls and batters my closed window.
The sky is a net filled with dark fish.
Here all the winds come, all of them.
The rain undresses.
The birds flee.
The wind.
I alone can fight against the power of men.
The storm swirls dark leaves
and releases all the boats that were moored to the sky last night.
You are here. Ah, you don't run away.
You will answer me until your last cry.
Curl up by my side as if you were afraid.
Yet once a strange shadow ran through your eyes.
Now, now too, little one, you bring me honeysuckle,
and even your breasts are perfumed.
While the sad wind gallops, killing butterflies,
I love you, and my joy bites your plum-like mouth.
How much it must have hurt you to get used to me,
to my lonely and wild soul, to my name that everyone drives away.
We have seen the morning star burn so many times, kissing our eyes,
and the sunsets untwist over our heads in whirling fans.
My words rained down upon you, caressing you.
For a long time I loved your sunlit mother-of-pearl body.
I even believe you are the owner of the universe.
I will bring you joyful flowers from the mountains, copihues,
dark hazelnuts, and wild baskets of kisses.
I want to do with you
what spring does with the cherry trees.
