GoPro recommends the SanDisk brand memory cards on their site, specifically the Extreme. They have a handy chart, I’ll link it down in the description for you. If you have a Hero 7, whether it’s black, silver, or white, the SanDisk Extreme, 32gb or 64gb is what GoPro is recommending.

In fact, SanDisk Extreme is the recommended card for any GoPro model, and that’s the only brand and card type that is recommended across the board. And generally the Extreme, Extreme Pro, and Extreme Plus cards are fine. The one you want to avoid is the Ultra - and I almost hate to mention that because I guarantee someone is going to send me a picture of a SanDisk Ultra and ask me if that will work with their GoPro. No. It probably won’t.

Some other cards to look at for the Hero7 are the Lexar 1000x, Samsung Evo, and Sony SR-UZA series.

As far as the capacity of the memory cards out there, I think 64GB is a good size. 32 is okay but for me it’s sometimes just not enough depending on what I’m shooting, so typically I go for the 64 and keep my 32’s for backup. Some GoPro models aren’t compatible with 128gb, so if you feel like you need that higher capacity, check the compatibility chart on gopro.com first, or just get two 64gb cards…

Regardless of which brand and size you go with, when you get a new memory card for your GoPro, go in and format that card in the GoPro itself first, before using it.

And the next time you’re in Walmart or Best Buy and you’re looking at memory cards, you might find some say they are compatible with GoPro cameras or “action cameras” in general, and that may be true, BUT it’s possible that the card you’re looking at was at some point compatible with an older model and not the latest model like the Hero 7 Black or Hero 6 For some reason the Hero 6 has sd card compatibility issues. So to avoid wasting money on a memory card that’s going to give you trouble and possibly cause you to miss your shots, I recommend sticking with the cards I mentioned in this video, and I linked to all of them in the description below this video, so check the prices and grab one now or go ahead and watch my video on the top 5 GoPro accessories every GoPro newbie needs.
