In this scene, the modally dependent splitting ratio of the multimode fibre coupler is illustrated. Whereby the LP(0,1) mode passes straight through and higher-order modes are split 50/50 but ultimately extinguished by the single-mode fibre attached to the thru-port on the left of the scene.
Studio executives deemed this scene gratuitous and felt it wouldn't appeal to a scientific audience.
Feedback from focus groups suggesting it should be replaced with a love story was ultimately ignored.
