Bluegills are a popular fish that can be easy to catch in late May and early June when they are more active during the spawning season.

One key to fishing success is to use light tackle. Jigs should be no larger than 1/32 ounce, line 4 to 6 pound strength, bobbers just large enough to stay afloat and limber fishing rod designed for this type of tackle.

During this May-June time, bluegills will be aggressive in taking tube jigs or hair jigs less than 1-1/2 inches long. If they are not too aggressive, try adding a one inch piece of night crawler or prepared bait to the hook.

Bluegills will be near gravel, sand or mud in shallow water, usually less than four feet deep. Many Iowa lakes have these locations marked on maps available at:
