Soft robotics is changing the face of wearable technology, medicine, and the art of squeezing into tight places. To make these highly deformable robots, 3D printing methods are starting to blossom which pattern soft materials and components into complex devices. This research spans from printing of sensors to actuators to circuitry. New material formulations and processing techniques make this technology transformation possible. This presentation will highlight some of the most advanced research in 3D printing of soft robotics and emphasize real-world applications in these amazing customizable technologies.
Steph Walker is a Ph.D. candidate pursuing a dual degree in Materials Science and Robotics from Oregon State University. She has worked for OSU, Intel, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) to develop additive manufacturing methods for soft materials, biodegradable polymers for soft robotics, and soft actuators for wearable technology. Her main interests lie in development of new materials and processing techniques for soft robot production, including multi-component and multi-material 3D printing, to create the wearables and devices of the future.
