The Alnwick Garden is a beautiful and fascinating attraction in Northumberland, England. It is adjacent to Alnwick Castle, which is famous for being a filming location for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. The garden has a long history under the dukes of Northumberland, but was revived in the 21st century by Jane Percy, Duchess of Northumberland. She hired Belgian landscape designers Jacques and Peter Wirtz to create a contemporary garden with various themes and features.
Some of the highlights of the garden are:
1) The Grand Cascade: A spectacular water feature with 120 jets and fountains that create different patterns and sequences. The cascade is surrounded by ornamental gardens and sculptures.
2) The Treehouse: A massive wooden structure that includes a restaurant, a cafe, rope bridges, and walkways. It is one of the largest treehouses in the world and offers a unique dining experience.
3) The Poison Garden: A gated garden that contains over 100 plants that are toxic, intoxicating, or narcotic. Visitors can only enter with a guided tour and are warned not to touch, smell, or taste anything. The garden showcases the dark side of nature and the history of medicine and witchcraft.
4) The Cherry Orchard: A stunning display of over 300 cherry trees that blossom in spring. The orchard also features 700,000 crocuses, daffodils, and bluebells that create a carpet of color. The orchard has a playful design with swinging benches and wobbly bridges.
The Alnwick Garden is a garden for everyone, with a variety of attractions, events, and activities for all ages and interests. It is also a registered charity that supports community and educational projects.
