Eastern Ghat Map in One Minute
The Eastern Ghats of India form a series of low mountain ranges running along the country's eastern coast. These discontinuous ranges traverse through the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Stretching approximately 1,131 km from the Mahanadi River in Odisha to the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu, the Eastern Ghats have a variable width of 100 to 200 km. Their discontinuity arises from interruptions, erosion, and cuts made by four major Peninsular rivers: the Mahanadi, Krishna, Kaveri, and Godavari.
Also known as Purva Ghat, Mahendra Parvatam, or Kizahakku Thodarchi Malai in the south, the Eastern Ghats are significantly older than the Western Ghats. Positioned parallel to the monsoon winds originating from the Bay of Bengal, they receive less rainfall compared to their western counterparts.
In the northern section of the Eastern Ghats, between the Mahanadi and Godavari rivers, true mountain characteristics are evident. This region features the Maliya and Madugula Konda ranges. The Maliya range has elevations between 900 and 1200 meters, with Mahendragiri Peak being the highest at 1501 meters. The Madugula Konda range stands between 1100 and 1200 meters in elevation, with Jindhagada Peak reaching the highest point at 1690 meters.
