Robert Sesselmann of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) is the new district administrator of the Sonneberg district. He is the first person from a party classified as right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Germany's domestic intelligence agency). What happens next in the district council?
Sesselmann was sworn in on Wednesday in Sonneberg, Thuringia. He was elected at the end of June amid considerable media attention. During his oath of office, Sesselmann swore to uphold the Basic Law (Germany's constitution), the constitution of the Free State of Thuringia, and all applicable laws, and to perform his official duties conscientiously and impartially.
The election of the AfD politician to the top local government position caused a stir and outrage nationwide. The Thuringian AfD is classified as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization and is under observation by the state's Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
The managing director of the German Association of Rural Districts, Hans-Günter Henneke, sees a challenge for Sesselmann's six-year term. Resolutions in the district council must be able to secure a majority, and the AfD currently does not have a majority in the council, Henneke said before the meeting in Sonneberg. Regarding cooperation with representatives of the AfD, Henneke distinguishes between different levels of cooperation.
