THE PAST, A PRESENT YET TO COME Play By Playwright Matt Schatz Promo – A New Christmas Play #shorts

ABOUT THE Play THE PAST, A PRESENT YET TO COME:

A New play The Past, A Present Yet to Come by Matt Schatz, a hilarious new addition to the holiday theatrical canon. When Fred, a young entrepreneur in Victorian London, sets out to soften his uncle Ebenezer Scrooge’s hardened heart, he seeks the help of a canny theatre impresario and an impoverished, womanizing Charles Dickens to stage an immersive play so powerful that it might just save his family and change the course of English literature.

“A Christmas Carol is the origin story of the modern idea of Christmas,” says Schatz, the award-winning playwright, whose work has appeared at Geffen Playhouse, City Theatre/Pittsburgh, and Actors Theatre of Louisville. ”I think that’s why I wanted to come up with a fun, apocryphal origin story of A Christmas Carol itself. There is unexplained magic in Dickens’ tale. But the only magic I have ever experienced has come through art, specifically the power of stories. The power of theater.”

Schatz deftly subverts what audiences might expect from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol by exploring its (very unlikely) origins.
