When were the first robots, replicants, and automatons conceived and created? Most people assume that the first self-propelled machines and mechanized statues were invented in the Middle Ages. But could it be that the very idea, the concept of automatons, may have emerged much earlier? Robots are remarkably ancient, dating back to the myths of classical Greece and even further afield: to ancient Babylon, China, India, and even the pre-Columbian cultures of Mesoamerica. It turns out that 2,500 years ago, some ancient Greek myths already envisioned the creation of artificial life: robot servants, lifelike replicas of people and animals, and even artificial intelligence.
