From celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Sexual Politics of Meat to appearance of The Pornography of Meat: New and Updated, in 2 minutes!! Using items I have been sent, this video suggests the dissemination of oppressive ideologies through popular culture, via T-shirts, magazines, meat advertisements, and much more.
After The Sexual Politics of Meat was published 30 years ago, my mail changed. Grassroots sociologists from around the world began to send me examples from popuiar culture that confirmed my claims in that books. The Pornography of Meat provides a discussion of these new examples, from Lolita Burgers,
(naturalizing and normalizing looking at girls as sexual objects) to “Protest your rack” (a pinkwashing of the sexual politics of meat), to so much more.
I went from a sense of “yuke” to “ahah!”-- I can explain what is going on here.
Through the sexual politics of meat, misogyny roams free—a grab ‘em by the you know environment in which oppression is made fun and funny.
Simultaneously, it mystifies the horrific treatment of farmed animals, through sexual innuendo and implying farmed animals want to be consumed.
A mobilization of retrograde beliefs about men and the gender binary, the re-assertion of the “real men eat meat” claims.
The Pornography of Meat: New and Updated explores these themes and others, and shows how a misogynist culture is also Informed by a xenophobic attitude toward protein, by racism and colonialisnm.
