What is PERLITE and what is it for?
Perlite is derived from a mineral extracted from volcanic rocks. When exposed to high temperatures, it expands and fragments. Perlite is very light, white, and looks a lot like Styrofoam.
Perlite is an excellent ingredient for aerating and oxygenating the soil. It provides better drainage, making it ideal for cactus and succulent mixes. It's also a great option for very wet soils.
Vermiculite is another ingredient we can use in substrates to help prevent compaction and improve aeration. However, it also retains some water, balancing the air and water in the soil. To learn more about vermiculite, we've linked another video we've made below.
