Regardless of if you are breathing unilateral or bilateral, the basis for how to breathe in during freestyle swimming is the same. Most common mistakes, and thereby - easy fixes are:
Pulling to early. Instead, stretch your leading arm out in front of you, making you longer in the water. That will help you keep your balance, and be more streamlined. Making you a more effective swimmer.
Think about your timing when you breathe. You should be done with your inhale by the time your hand is in line with your eyes. Then it’s time for you to look down again, start breathing out, and starting your pull-phase.
Don’t hold your breath! swimming is an endurance sport, and that means that you need to be able to breathe properly.
