Ecosystem services and Biodiversity - Science for Environment Policy
What's the price of nature? To keep Europe’s ecosystems healthy, we need to protect #biodiversity. How can the #ecosystem service approach help? And how can we capture people’s more deeply held values beyond mere money? What are ecosystem services? How do we categorise ecosystem services? How do we benefit from biodiversity?
Ecosystem services are categorised into different benefits:
Provisioning services are products we obtain from ecosystems (food, water, fibre, fuel, etc.).
Regulating services are benefits we obtain from the regulation of ecosystem processes (climate, floods, pollination, etc.).
Supporting services are necessary to produce other ecosystem services (soil formation, photosynthesis, etc.).
Cultural services are non-material services for people (spiritual enrichment, cognitive development, recreation, aesthetic experiences, etc.).
It’s important to understand the values and services provided by natural ecosystems since they are the driving force for the long-term protection and restoration of European natural capital. Damage to natural ecosystems mean significant costs for business and society as the services they provide represent large shares of the economy.
