The first part of our video synchronization process is a visible timecode.
Modern clapper boards have a digital timecode display. This is then used in post-production to sync up the audio and video. We don't have a virtual clapper board, but we do have an audio recorder with a timecode display. The transport of our digital audio workstation can display the current audio timecode. If we include a screen capture of this, we can use it in the same way as a digital clapper board. During post, we align the audio with the timecode visible in the video.
We make sure to show the audio timecode at the end of the video as well. Because the video and audio tend to drift apart, this helps with re-aligning them later. Drift happens even if both are already in sync at the start of recording. Making shorter recordings can help keep them in sync.
The second part is what's called a linear timecode (LTC). An LTC is a timecode that is stored in the audio track of a video file. It's an audio signal, which is convenient since you can use your existing audio equipment to route it. REAPER can generate an LTC, so it's relatively easy to get that signal into our video recorder. We use DaVinci Resolve to update the video's timecode based on its embedded LTC during post.
