The Milky Way is known as the Milky Way in English. But what do we know about this galaxy we inhabit? For example, how big is the Milky Way? What's inside it? What's at its center? How did it form? Here's a detailed documentary about the Milky Way, often dismissed as a galaxy and often overlooked as a galaxy.
In ancient times, the Greek philosopher Democritus, like us, would look up at the night sky and declare around 400 BC that this Milky Way was composed of distant stars. Later, like his colleague, the father of philosophy, Aristotle, believed that the Milky Way was the result of the combustion of numerous interconnected stars. Arab astronomer Ibn al-Haytham even attempted to observe and measure the Milky Way in the 1000s. The Persian Biruni predicted that the galaxy might contain countless, cloudless stars, but this was in the early 1000s. Galileo, as we mentioned earlier, was threatened with death in 1610 for his observations with a telescope, which he claimed was formed by the convergence of many stars. In 1750, Thomas Wright, in his work "An Original Theory or New Hypothesis of the Universe," proposed that the galaxy is a mass of numerous rotating stars, similar to the Solar System but on a larger scale, bound together by gravity.
